Yakima River - June 30th, 2010

Overall really great fishing today. We fished Ringer to Umtanum today from 9:30am to 3:30pm. The river has come down a bit to 3200 cfs since the big push of water (4200 cfs @ Umtanum), but keep your eyes out for daily bursts and how they affect clarity. We had great visibility above Wilson Creek, but in common form Wilson was puking in some dark water which didn't clear up to afford good fishing again for a mile or so downstream. Early with streamers, mid-morning nymphing and afternoon non-stop gut-busting dry fly fishing from Big Horn through the Rock Garden. 23 fish to the boat. Most under 11" with one at 15" (sculpzilla) and one at 16" (Cahill). Good day for a 3 wt. Flies: Black Sculpzilla (size 8), BH Prince Nymph (size 16), Pats Stonefly, Light Cahill (size 16), Stimmie (various)

Looking for respite from the flows and crowds on the main stem of the Yakima, we fished an upper fork of the Teanaway on the 4th for an or so on the way to a family bbq at BurbCadia.

11 fish to hand...all under 11". Small water, attractor dries and some careful casting in to pools and deep riffles pay off with greedy little rainbows. If you're not looking for big 'uns and have fun casting to eager fish, this river at this time of year offers a distraction and change of pace - and little competition.

When: EARLY! You need to be on the river at first light, fish until 7:30a.m., Denny’s by 8:00a.m.

Fishing the lower river for Lake Washington Rainbows and Cutts has been good very early in the mornings. The entire river holds fish, some of them are very big, the largest fish in the river are migratory fish from the lake. For anglers looking to get a shot at the largest fish in this river (fish from 18”-27”) the lower 6 miles holds the majority of these. Like most big trout, going deep in the lower light of the morning is vastly more successful than other techniques.

Where: Near Morton

When: Any time of day, although late evening is often the best dry fly fishng.

Fishing this little river near the town of Morton is consistently a great spot for beginners or any angler looking for a boost in confidence. In addition to the thousands of trout planted in this river every two weeks, a healthy population of hold-over and wild Cutthroat make the Tilton one of the safest bets on the West-side. Add to this to the very good dry fly fishing and easy access, and you have an easy choice.

Floated High Bridge to Sultan this morning. The river is really LOW and ultra CLEAR right now. We fished 7am to noon on a bit of a recon mission. We didn't see any fish roll or rise. Nothing spooked out from holes or runs as the boat pushed over.

Wait for the next bit of precip and jump back on the horse. We need some rain to push some fresh fish in to the system. The river is pretty boney right now so be prepared for some rubbin and bumpin.

Tokul Creek has shut down their summer run operation at this point. The river has been fishing fair. One take at the end of the first run at David Powewll Road. Floating line, Purple Plum behind Bomber.

4 fish landed today between 8” and 21”. Down low the river is still fishing well very early in the morning. We nymphed all morning and raised/hooked lots of fish with 4 to hand. Make sure to have a strong and long 6 weight to get your double nymph rigs out there without tangling as well as fighting the big fish. Try to be on the river by 5:00AM and expect to be all by yourself. Fish the darker water with a large fly like a speculator on top with a small, colored dropper underneath. **IMPORTANT** Bring only what you need to fish and leave nothing in your car unless you’re parking at the library. Two of our cars were broken into; not much was taken but meth heads will do anything for something that looks even of minimal value and pawnable. You might even want to have something in your car that says “nothing of value in here”. Beside the car issues, the fishing was great.

3 boats, 8 men and no salmon.

We fished Neah Bay Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Despite the clear, sunny weather across the entire state Washington, Neah Bay was a bit chilly and completely fogged in until Sunday AM. This, coupled with HUGE tide exchanges, made for some lumpy water and tough conditions. Rock fish and Ling Cod fishing was good, not great and there were no salmon to be found on the inside of Tatoosh. Those boats we saw that were able to make it out to Swift Shore Bank seemed to be able to limit out, but the fish were deep.

We fished the Lower Yak on Saturday (Snively to Hyde Rd). Plenty of smallies still in the system that are willing to bite, but the flows are slow and low right now. We turned and burned through the frog water and concentrated on structure and faster, more oxygenated water.

Brown, Yellow, White and Green Buggers (sz. 6-12), Top Water Popper (Green and Yellow).

16+ fish to hand... most in the 6"-12" range.

Flows are raging at this point and best to fish out of the high hot sun.... Dawn to 11am or 4pm-Dusk. Tough going today. We didn't see any bug activity today and aside from from the two fish that rose to our stimulator and hoppers. Really a tough going both from a fishing perspective and behind the oars. Keep an eye on the takeout at east Cle Elum, the channel that dumps in at the takeout ramp is REALLY flowing right now and making pulling out there tough and kinda sketchy.

Tuna Fishing out of Hammond, OR (No Standard Body of Water for Pacific Ocean)

Weather: Overcast in the morning, sunny in the afternoon with moderate seas and bar

Fishing: 18 fish hooked, 13 to boat

Flies: shock and awes are all you’ll need (and I wouldn’t want anything else)

Imagine a 200lb Chinook that never gets tired…If you can’t go tuna fishing. There is nothing like landing a tuna on a fly rod. First of all, you’ll need a stout 12 weight to land a 20lb fish. We’ve all heard stories of 100 yard steelhead runs. While I’ve never actually seen one of those I can tell you that the first burst of a hooked tuna will easily take 100 yards off your backing…and expect 2 or 3 of these in an honest 20 minute wrestle with this impressive fish. If you can land a tuna you can land anything. You NEED to get down to Hammond and go fishing with Chuck. He’s a cheerful, salty captain who listens to what you want and gets you on top of fish.

Some things to keep in mind for your trip: Bimini leaders, these fish fight hard to the end and you want a leader that can handle the constant shock and tension that come with tuna. Polarized glasses are a must, the glare from the water will burn your eyes by the end of the day and having some polarized protection also lets you see these beautiful fish in the water (believe it or not you will probably have an opportunity to do some sight casting!!). BONINE, if you might get sea sick… you will; take a BONINE the night before and 1 ½ when you get up and you will feel great without the drowsiness of Dramamine. The bait switch, ask Chuck to point out the bait switch to you before you shove off so that you make sure you DON’T turn it off. When a fish is hooked, he throws some live bait into the water to keep the fish around/bring them up (hello sight casting). You really need to book a trip. If you don’t believe me, next time you’re in the shop ask if anybody’s ever been tuna fishing and see the reaction you get…you’ll never be the same once you’ve landed a tuna.

Snoq. Area Small Marsh (named, but unnamed) in Hancock Private Forest.

Plenty of small native Cutthroat and Brookies if you're willing to hike in and explore this area just an hour outside of Seattle. Small Dries: Parachute Adams, Black Gnat, Small Humpies/Royal Wolff.

Maps available from USFS or Hancock (if you buy a permit). This area is an excellent local resource, protect and respect it. Please know that permits are required to drive in to the Hancock Forest. You cannot pass by Gate 10 on to the Spur Road without a permit and a key to the locked gates.

Word of warning: PLENTY of leeches in this marsh system. We got leeched several times as we wet waded. Waders recommended and have a friend do a thorough leech check when done.

Carleton to Rhinehart's. Noon-7pm

Strike while the iron is hot. Its no secret that these few weeks turn the sometimes fickle Yakima in to a productive and more predictable blue ribbon fishery. Be prepared for some pressure and feel free to select a shorter section or float to fish and take your time. The fish are willing to feed more consistently right now. We ran double dry rigs with a larger Stone immitation and a smaller dry. We were about 50/50 between the two.

The river is in great shape right now between the rains with plenty of Coho and lingering Steelhead tucked in to the pockets of all those silvers.

We had a great day catching Coho and getting the benefit of the occasional Steelhead as a by-catch - who can complain about that?!?!

Watch the flows and the weather...the penninsula can be incredible or be totally blown out within a matter of 6 hours.

Just goes to show...you DON'T have to go to Alaska to catch great quantities of really big Anadromous fish. Get out and fish Washington.

We spent the weekend fishing around Forks with Jim Kerr's guide service (www.raincoastguides.com) and while 3" of rain didn't help the cause (blowing out everything except the Sol Duc), we made do and managed an epic day of fishing on Monday.

We floated the lower river with 18" visibility and high water. While the downside is lower visibility, the benefit of big water is nice, bright, big fish...if they can see what you're chuckin'.

3 Chinook, 7 Coho, 4 Jacks and many more LDR's.

We through quite a variety of big, ugly Salmon patterns down deep. Chartruse/Black, Bright Orange/Silver etc., etc. See Anil for more details. He has this dialed in and the shop carries all of the patterns you'll need.

There are a good number of fish in the system right now and the water is starting to clear up after a couple of warm days up on Adams. We went 2/4 and the fishing should pick up considerably over the next couple of days. Time to call in a sick day or two.

Despite the crowds and traffic, the bogachiel has been fishing amazing. Tons of hatchery brats pushing in to the system.

We swung flies and nymphed beads to manage 5 steelhead for 8 hookups over 2 days.

Fishing: Good

The Hoh River is on the drop with plenty of fish starting to push in to the system. While January isn't necessarily considered a 'hot' month for the Hoh, pressure is low and flows can be slightly more consistent. Look for flows under 2500 for floating or wading and match color and size to water clarity.

3 for 5 with 3 hatchery fish and 1 wild fish.

Fishing on the Penninsula is hot right now. Flows are dropping/have dropped and there are plenty of wild fish in the system right now. Nymphing and Swinging are both effective right now and keep your eyes on the rivers between a good compromise between low enough and 'not too clear'... The bogachiel and Hoh have been red hot, but as these rivers drop even more fish will spreadout in the system. Short bursts of rain may push more fish in so keep your eyes on weather and get a kitchen pass. Now is the time.

Pinks are in. The humpies have finally arrived and can be targeted easily from shore or from a boat in close proximity to shore. We landed 20+ fish in 5 hours on Sunday morning.

5wt-7wt Rods with clear, intermediate sink tips (floating lines can work with heavily weighted flies). Pink shock and awes, pink clousers.

These fish run concentrated in schools mostly and run within 50-100 feet of shore approx.
